The Broadway community is mourning the loss of Gavin Creel, a beloved actor and singer who passed away on September 30, 2024, at the age of 48. Creel, known for his vibrant performances and warm personality, died after a brief battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma.

Gavin Creel’s career spanned over two decades, during which he became a cherished figure in the theater world. He won a Tony Award in 2017 for his role as Cornelius Hackl in the revival of “Hello, Dolly!” alongside Bette Midler. Creel was also known for his performances in “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Hair,” “The Book of Mormon,” and “Waitress”.

Many of Creel’s colleagues and friends have shared heartfelt tributes. Bette Midler, his co-star in “Hello, Dolly!,” expressed her sorrow, saying, “I looked forward to working with him every single night. He was fantastic. I can’t believe he’s gone. What a loss”. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of “Hamilton,” remembered Creel as his first King George III during the show’s early workshops, praising his charisma and talent.

Creel’s impact extended beyond his performances. He was known for his kindness and generosity, often mentoring younger actors and supporting various charitable causes. His death has left a significant void in the Broadway community, with many describing him as a bright light both on and off the stage.
