Missing Massachusetts Man: Body Discovered in SC

Authorities in South Carolina believe they may have found the body of a Massachusetts man who has been missing for over a week while vacationing with his family on Hilton Head Island.

Stanley Kotowski, 60, was last seen on August 16 when he left his family’s rental home in Sea Pines, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. On Monday, authorities found a body under a home in Sea Pines, which they believe to be Kotowski’s, as per the sheriff’s office.

Authorities responded to the location around 11:30 a.m. ET Monday due to “suspicious activity,” and the body was found and removed about four hours later, according to the sheriff’s office.

An autopsy will be performed by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday to confirm the identity and determine the cause of death, the sheriff’s office said.

“We appreciate the help from other agencies, Sea Pines Security, and the community during the search for Mr. Kotowski,” said the sheriff’s office. Kotowski’s family reported him missing about two hours after he was last seen, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Master Sergeant Daniel Allen. He was considered endangered because of his mental state, the amount of time he had been missing, and because he was last seen on a Ring camera without shoes, Allen said.

According to the incident report, Jackie Kotowski told deputies that her husband thought Sea Pines was a “setup” and believed people there were out to get him. She also said he had made “several comments about people ‘watching him’ at this place,” the report stated.
