Mike Johnson Supports Clay Higgins, Urges for Understanding and Redemption

House Speaker Mike Johnson has just defended embattled Congressman Clay Higgins, who stirred an uproar with his controversial post about Haitian migrants. Higgins had taken to social media, referring to Haitian migrants as “thugs” and a variety of other names. The posting was quickly taken down, but not before it had caused outrage.

Johnson told the reporters that Higgins is a man of principle who made a mistake. He said Higgins was sorry for the words; he took them down after he had time to reflect. Johnson emphasized atonement and moving on to the value that one has to be given a chance to redeem himself.

The incident has raised a hornet’s nest in Congress, with many now seeking censure for Higgins. The Congressional Black Caucus, along with other Democrats, has been very vocal concerning the criticism; such comments are not only dangerous but unacceptable. They truly feel that Higgins’ words further create a climate of fear and intimidation for immigrants.

Notwithstanding the hue and cry, Johnson continued in support of Higgins on the grounds of his friend’s character and the action taken by him to make amends. Reactions toward Johnson’s support of Higgins remain mixed, with some appreciative of the call for redemption, while others believe much more could be done on the path toward accountability.

The incident has illuminated the debates and tensions that consistently relate to immigration and how migrants are dealt with in the country. Additionally, it draws attention to the tough job legislators have as they weigh free speech against the need for respectful speech and inclusionary speech.

Though Higgins’ comments have been universally condemned, the call by Johnson for repentance reflects belief in second chances, and some possibilities for growth and change.
