John Amos, Star of ‘Good Times’ and ‘Roots,’ Passes Away at 84

John Amos, the beloved actor known for his roles in “Good Times” and “Roots,” has passed away at the age of 84. His son, K.C. Amos, confirmed that John died on August 21, 2024, in Los Angeles due to natural causes. This news has saddened many fans who remember him as a significant figure in television history.

John Amos had a remarkable career that spanned several decades. He first gained widespread recognition for his role as James Evans Sr. on the sitcom “Good Times,” which aired from 1974 to 1979. The show was groundbreaking as it was one of the first to focus on an African-American family living in a Chicago housing project. Amos’s portrayal of the hardworking and stern yet loving father resonated with many viewers.

Before “Good Times,” Amos played Gordy the weatherman on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” His performance there showcased his versatility and comedic timing. However, it was his role in the miniseries “Roots” that earned him an Emmy nomination. He played the older Kunta Kinte, a character that left a lasting impact on audiences and highlighted the brutal realities of slavery.

Amos’s career wasn’t limited to television. He also appeared in several films, including “Coming to America,” where he played the owner of McDowell’s, a fast-food restaurant. His role in this comedy classic alongside Eddie Murphy is fondly remembered by fans.

Despite his success, Amos faced challenges in his career. He was fired from “Good Times” after three seasons due to disagreements with the show’s direction. Amos felt that the show was straying from its original intent to portray a realistic African-American family and was instead focusing too much on comedic elements. This decision was controversial, but Amos continued to work in the industry, taking on various roles that showcased his talent and dedication.

In addition to his acting career, Amos was also known for his athleticism. He played football at Colorado State University and had tryouts with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. This athletic background added to his commanding presence on screen.
