You may have heard about Sentry being called Marvel’s answer to Superman. He’s incredibly powerful, with the strength of “a million exploding suns,” but there’s still a big question: Who is Sentry? The character’s real name is Robert “Bob” Reynolds, but no one had heard of him before the year 2000. Even Marvel’s strongest superheroes can’t easily face him.
Sentry is someone that the Hulk respects and has been best friends with Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic). However, Sentry himself didn’t know these things about himself, and that’s part of what makes his story so interesting. Sentry is set to appear in the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie, and it will be intriguing to see if anyone can handle a character like him in the MCU.
The Origin of Sentry
Sentry, or Robert Reynolds, will be making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the “Thunderbolts” movie, where he will be played by Lewis Pullman. Sentry’s character can easily rival Marvel heavyweights like Hulk and Thor. He is often called “Marvel’s Superman,” and his backstory is unique and compelling. The creator of Sentry, Paul Jenkins, introduced a new superhero who is deeply tied to Marvel’s history but was somehow forgotten by everyone.
Sentry first appeared in “The Sentry” miniseries in 2000. The story begins with Bob Reynolds, a middle-aged man who suddenly remembers he is Sentry, a superhero with the power of a million exploding suns, a power he gained from a special serum. He soon realizes his old enemy, Void, has returned. However, when Bob warns his superhero friends, he discovers that no one remembers Sentry—not even himself.
Sentry’s Forgotten Past
As Sentry’s memories come back, we learn he has a rich history in the Marvel Universe. Peter Parker had once taken a famous photograph of him, the Hulk called him “the Golden Man,” and Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards) remembers Sentry as his best friend. But why had everyone forgotten him? Together, Robert and Mister Fantastic start investigating, but meanwhile, the threat of the Void looms over Earth.
When Robert tries to access his AI companion, Clock, in his tower on top of Stark Tower, Clock mentions that the last person to give him commands was Reed Richards. Eventually, with the help of Doctor Strange, Reed remembers the truth.
Origin of Sentry
Back in 1947, during “Operation Rebirth,” scientists in Canada were trying to develop a super-soldier serum, similar to what created Captain America, but 100 times more potent. Years went by with no success. Then, a meth addict named Robert Reynolds stumbled into the lab and injected himself with the experimental serum, giving him the power of a million exploding suns. However, the serum’s effects were short-lived, forcing Robert to keep taking it again and again. A scientist warned him that taking the serum repeatedly was dangerous, but Robert ignored the advice and became a powerful, optimistic superhero.
Sentry soon made friends with other superheroes like the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Professor X. But, the more he took the serum, the more his mind began to unravel. It was discovered that Void, the terrifying villain, was a darker part of Sentry himself. The serum had split his personality into two: Sentry, the hero, and Void, the villain.
Erasing Sentry from Everyone’s Memory
Realizing the danger he posed, Sentry decided to erase all memories of himself from everyone’s minds with the help of Reed Richards and his AI, Clock. This is why when Sentry’s memories started to return, no one, not even Sentry, understood why no one remembered him.
What’s Next for Sentry in the MCU?
Sentry’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could open the door to many exciting storylines. The leaked trailer of the “Thunderbolts” movie showed Louis Pullman as Sentry and hinted at the appearance of the Golden Sentry Serum. With Sentry’s immense power, but lack of self-control, he could be a significant challenge for all superheroes. His strength is said to be a hundred thousand times that of Captain America, and he has faced off against powerful foes like Thor and Galactus.
As Sentry joins the MCU, we might see the beginning of many new stories, including the “Dark Avengers” and “Siege of the Thunderbolts.” His presence could also lead to the long-awaited “World War Hulk” storyline, where Hulk, in his most powerful form, returns from Sakaar to bring chaos to Earth. If no one else can stop Hulk, Sentry might be the last hope.
