Convention roll call votes are often formal and predictable, but Democrats transformed theirs into an epic dance party on Tuesday.
DJ Cassidy, dressed in what seemed to be a royal blue double-breasted satin suit, took the stage and spun a unique song for each state and territory as they awarded their delegates to Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention. The result was a star-studded karaoke mashup: Detroit native Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for Michigan, Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” for Massachusetts, and Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” for California.
Georgia showcased one of its own, with Atlanta’s Lil Jon making an in-person appearance at Chicago’s United Center, striding through to the beats of his hit song with DJ Snake, “Turn Down for What.”
In essence, Democrats were committed to bringing the “party” to their political party, as part of a larger strategy to exude joy and positive energy, even while emphasizing the urgent need to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump.
